1. A Christmas Story is a favorite for me, not so much as a Christmas movie, but as a tale well-told of a time and a place. (The movie isn't completely accurate in its portrayal, but the narration is spot on.) The narrator in the movie is Jean Shepherd, who authored the short stories the movie is based on. Many years ago he used to read those stories, from time to time, on public radio. They were great fun to listen to, and it was at a time in our life when radio was our only electronic media. That added to the enjoyment.
For many weeks after Shepherd was no longer on the air, we'd check out library books and I'd read the stories to my wife, using my best Jean Shepherd voice. The movie evokes that time in our life as much as it does the time in American life it portrays, and so is special to me. It became a must-see for the family once the girls were old enough to appreciate it.
